Hello, 28th week of Kindergarten! Spring is an exciting time in Kindergarten because students are making progress at a rapid rate, the sun in shining, and the year is starting to wind down. Every year I tell my Kinders, "When your teeth start falling out, when you grow too big to fit on the carpet, and when you know things before I teach them... that's when I'll know you're ready for first grade."

We are moving on to some big (and fun) science concepts this week! We will learn about force and motion first, then move on to simple machines next week. Much of our hands-on learning occurs during our free play time each afternoon. Our monthly theme for March is, "Science Lab." Options for play include magnets, stacking cups, measurement tools, a microscope, marble runs, ramps/balls, and an inventor's Maker Space. It's so fun to watch Kindergarteners pretend, invent, create, build, and test! In core math we are starting a new unit that introduces subtraction while continuing a review of measurement. We will use several hands-on activities to practice measuring length with both standard and non-standard tools. In addition, I'm excited to use my new Science-themed Guided Reading books to reinforce math measurement and science concepts during my reading groups. In literacy we are pressing on with Saxon Phonics, Heggerty Phonemic Awareness, and with basic sight words.
I'm excited to share a couple of space books this week! For Women's History Month and to couple with our force/motion science theme, we will learn about Sally Ride AND the concept of gravity through these read alouds:
