At the end of the week we will celebrate Earth Day and that will kick our our study of natural resources and ways to take care of the environment next week. In core math we will continue our unit on the base ten system.  We've been reviewing this concept for awhile in calendar so it should be easy to understand. In literacy we are pressing on with Saxon PhonicsHeggerty Phonemic Awareness, and with basic sight words.

There are so many picture books that are perfect for this week!

Kindergarten Spring Animals Lesson Plans

Spring Break is over and it's time to finish the year strong! We have only 6 weeks of school left - I can't believe we are in the home stretch of the school year! But, it's not the time to let down. This week we will introduce a new behavior incentive that's sure to keep everyone on track.

3 Big Goals:

Spring Break Reset

Introduce Desk Pets

Egg Hunt!

Famous Words:

"Spring is nature's way of saying, "Let's Party!" -Robin Williams

As we return from Spring Break and gear up to finish the school year it's so important to maintain consistency and continuity so that student behavior and engagement doesn't spiral out of control. I will introduce our school-wide currency system as well as our "Desk Pet Shop." Students will be able to save our school "paws-i-tives" to earn pets, their homes, and their accessories. It's a wonderful way to refresh engagement and manage minor behaviors when everyone is excited for summer, but the year isn't quite over yet. Are you looking for ideas to reset your class after spring break? The CLICK HERE to check out my blog post with tons of options! In core math we will begin our unit on the base ten system.  We've been reviewing this concept for awhile in calendar so it should be easy to understand. In literacy we are pressing on with Saxon PhonicsHeggerty Phonemic Awareness, and with basic sight words.

These are a couple of my favorite funny spring and Easter books!

Kindergarten Creative Arts Lesson Plans

This is one of the most special weeks of the school year at Murray Elementary! It's Creative Arts Week! Read more about how we celebrate our students' talents HERE!

3 Big Goals:

Creative Arts Week

Preschool Transition Visits

Prep for Spring Break!

Famous Words:

"You can't use up creativity. The more you use, the more you have." -Maya Angelou

Creative Arts week is so much fun! Students are encouraged to share a special talent with their class. Each classes chooses a representative for the school-wide talent assembly at the end of the week. I have a personal passion for the arts so I love that we take time to reinforce the concepts of music, drama, dance, and visual arts, as well as engineering, sports, and technology! PLUS, this will be our FIRST school-wide assembly since 2019! In core math we are continuing our unit on comparing numbers.  In literacy we are pressing on with Saxon PhonicsHeggerty Phonemic Awareness, and with basic sight words.

There are SO many wonderful books on art and music as well as finding your own special talent! These will be among several books we read this week!

Kindergarten Spring Weather Lesson Plans

Welcome, spring! Spring in Kentucky is a fun time! We enjoy March madness as we take basketball in this state very seriously, the blooming flowers are gorgeous, and, in our small college town, spring fever fills the air as the community takes over the sidewalks, parks, and our walk-up Dairy Queen!

3 Big Goals:

Parent-Teacher Conferences

Parent-Teacher Conferences

Parent-Teacher Conferences

(Listed 3 times, because, let's be honest... accomplishing these will be it's own feat.)

Famous Words:

"The way I see it, if you want the rainbow, you gotta put up with the rain." -Dolly Parton

We are embracing spring weather this week and exploring all types of weather. Already this month we've had warm temps and sunshine, severe storms and a tornado warning, a couple of inches of snow, and record-setting wind chills. Talk about March madness! In core math we are moving on to a new unit on comparing numbers. We've been comparing numbers during calendar time since August, so learning the vocabulary and the symbols that go along with the concept will be a piece of cake! In literacy we are pressing on with Saxon PhonicsHeggerty Phonemic Awareness, and with basic sight words.

Weather is a great topic because it's a common first-hand experience for children and adults. I look forward to some great class discussions this week!

Kindergarten St. Patrick's Day and Simple Machines Lesson Plans

Happy St. Patrick's week! It's week 29 in Kindergarten and time for more science exploration and fun. This is quite possibly one of my favorite weeks of the school year! Check out the fun we've had in past years HERE!

3 Big Goals:

Spring MAP Testing

Complete Report Cards

Schedule Parent-Teacher Conferences

Famous Words:

"Luck has nothing to do with it. I've spent many, many hours on the court working for my one moment in time, not knowing when it will come" -Serena Williams

My students have LOVED the Science Lab and Maker Space this last week. I have LOVED seeing their creativity and ingenuity! This week we will expand our unit on Force and Motion to cover Simple Machines and then use that knowledge to create Leprechaun Traps. It's always so fun to see how they plan their traps. This time of year is really magical and bittersweet in Kindergarten. I can see how far my students have come, see their potential for the future, and, yet, I know my time when them is winding down. In core math we are continuing our new unit on subtraction while continuing a review of measurement. We will use several hands-on activities to practice measuring length with both standard and non-standard tools. In literacy we are pressing on with Saxon PhonicsHeggerty Phonemic Awareness, and with basic sight words.

St. Patrick's Day is a time for light-hearted fun and traditions in Kindergarten! We will explore some fun books this week:

Kindergarten March Force and Motion Lesson Plans

Hello, 28th week of Kindergarten! Spring is an exciting time in Kindergarten because students are making progress at a rapid rate, the sun in shining, and the year is starting to wind down. Every year I tell my Kinders, "When your teeth start falling out, when you grow too big to fit on the carpet, and when you know things before I teach them... that's when I'll know you're ready for first grade."

3 Big Goals:

Jump into Science Content

Complete Opinion Writing Pieces

Begin 3rd Quarter Assessments

Famous Words:

"All adventures, especially into new territory, are scary." -Sally Ride

We are moving on to some big (and fun) science concepts this week! We will learn about force and motion first, then move on to simple machines next week. Much of our hands-on learning occurs during our free play time each afternoon. Our monthly theme for March is, "Science Lab." Options for play include magnets, stacking cups, measurement tools, a microscope, marble runs, ramps/balls, and an inventor's Maker Space. It's so fun to watch Kindergarteners pretend, invent, create, build, and test! In core math we are starting a new unit that introduces subtraction while continuing a review of measurement. We will use several hands-on activities to practice measuring length with both standard and non-standard tools. In addition, I'm excited to use my new Science-themed Guided Reading books to reinforce math measurement and science concepts during my reading groups. In literacy we are pressing on with Saxon PhonicsHeggerty Phonemic Awareness, and with basic sight words.

I'm excited to share a couple of space books this week! For Women's History Month and to couple with our force/motion science theme, we will learn about Sally Ride AND the concept of gravity through these read alouds:
